Quite a few times, I was in line of sight of an enemy, and they wouldn’t even think twice before I’d take him down. While the stealth sections can add a fun bit of variation, the AI doesn’t seem to realize what’s going on.Īs long as I didn’t take out a soldier in view of another, I could sneak around the map and take out each enemy with a headshot. This is by far the weakest link in the chain of this game. ![]() However, sometimes a firefight isn’t the wisest course of action, so a quieter touch is required. A cover system is in play, and at higher difficulty, it’s the difference between life and death. In a larger firefight, while you can survive, you won’t last long in the open. There is a slight amount of health regeneration, but only a slight boost. Health and armor pickups are still the norm here, just like in the old days. Health and body armor is a charming mix between the old and the new. Letters and newspaper clippings flesh out the history of the new world, along with the usual weapon and health upgrades. The weapon designs are fun too, as they take WWII weapons, and imagine what 20+ years of Nazi engineering with advanced technology would become, yes and this does include lasers.Įach level has plenty of collectibles to keep you on the lookout. Just about every weapon is dual wieldable, so mowing down Nazi hordes with dual assault rifles blazing is a blast. It’s an FPS, so you know what you’re getting into, but Wolfenstein manages to make it fun. Gameplay is where the Wolfenstein shines. What follows is a engaging and entertaining story that is surprisingly lengthy and full of fun twists and turns. One would think that mowing down wave after wave of German soldiers, then soon after sharing a touching moment with Anya, Blazkowicz’s comrade in the resistance and love interest, would be a bit dissonant, but it works. From Blazkowicz’s introspective thoughts, to his interactions with the other members of the Resistance, MachineGames manages to walk quite a fine line in balancing the louder and quieter moments throughout the game’s story. These supporting characters/refugees are part of the emotional undercurrent that is present in this game. He is supported by what’s left of the Nazi resistance, the Kreisau Circle. ![]() Series villain General Wilhelm “ Deathshead” Strasse once again returns to antagonize Blazkowicz, but he is not alone in his fight. The Nazis have all but eliminated any resistance and dissent against them, so it would seem that it’s quite literally you against the world, and you’d mostly be right. You play series stalwart OSA agent William “ BJ” Blazkowicz as he makes his way through the various European locales in this alternate 1960s taking on the Nazis, and quite literally their war machines. Set in an alternate history where, through the use of advanced technology, the Nazis have won the War, and taken over a majority of the globe. MachineGames has not only re-imagined the classic series, but managed to knock it out of the park with their first major title. With Wolfenstein: The New Order developer MachineGames hopes to revive on of the franchises that shaped the modern FPS.ĭid MachineGames meet their goal, or is this another classic game series that should be put down? Since then the series has been dormant, until now. The last time a Wolfenstein game was playable on our consoles/PCs, the year was 2009, and it was not a very great success. ![]()
